The work

Everything here concerns fences and gates: cedar privacy fences on steel posts, wrought iron and ornamental steel, walk, drive and automatic gates, pool barriers, staining, and the repairs and replacements that follow storms, clay movement and age. A project starts with the property line, the city rule and the post plan, and ends with a walk of the finished line.

  • Wood & privacy fences: Cedar privacy fences on galvanized steel posts, 6 or 8 ft, built for Allen's fence rules and Houston Black clay.
  • Fence replacement: Old fences removed and rebuilt on galvanized steel posts, permitted and laid out to Allen's current fence rules.
  • Fence repair: Leaning posts reset on steel, failed rails and pickets replaced, and the cause checked so the repair holds.
  • Gates: Walk gates, double drive gates and alley gates on steel frames and deep-set posts, built so they stay square.
  • Automatic gates: Swing and slide driveway gates with openers, sensors and controls, planned around Allen alley drives and clay soil.
  • Iron & ornamental steel: Black ornamental steel picket fences for front yards, pools and open views, set in concrete and finished against rust.
  • Pool fences: Pool barriers and self-closing, self-latching gates built to Allen's pool and fence guidelines, in iron or cedar on steel posts.
  • Fence staining: Cleaning and penetrating stain for cedar fences, timed to the wood's moisture and Allen's sun, with HOA colors checked first.
  • Commercial fencing: Chain link, security fencing, ornamental steel and gates for business properties, yards and HOA common areas.

Who does the work

Garth Allen Fence Builders sets up and manages each project. The work follows these standards:

  • Steel posts on every fence. The City of Allen Residential Fence Guideline requires metal posts on all fencing, with metal caps and hardware, so cedar and iron alike go up on steel.
  • Posts in concrete, at least 18 inches. Allen sets an 18-inch minimum post depth in concrete. Tall fences and gate posts go deeper, because Houston Black clay swells and shrinks hard with the seasons.
  • Permit, HOA and contractor registration. Fences in Allen need a $75 city permit, and the city asks owners to clear any HOA review first. Installation is carried out by insured fence contractors registered with the City of Allen.
  • Texas811 before digging. The City of Allen directs a Texas811 utility locate before any post hole is dug.
  • Easements, sight lines and pools. Fences in the 3-ft lot-line drainage easement keep a 3-inch gap at the bottom, corner lots keep clear sight lines, and pool enclosures follow the city's barrier rules.

How pricing works

Typical DFW-area per-foot ranges are published on the homepage and in the fence cost guide, and the cost estimator gives a range before anyone visits. The price for a specific property comes in a written quote after the site visit, once the line, gates, slope and access are measured.

Where the work happens

Projects cover Allen and nearby Collin County cities. The area pages explain how permit rules and post depths change from city to city.

How an Allen fence project usually runs

  1. First call

The line, the height, gates, slope, the dog, the pool, the HOA. Photos help.

  2. On the property

The line is measured, drainage easements and sprinkler heads noted, and the material and gate plan settled.

  3. Permit and HOA

HOA approval first where it applies, then the City of Allen permit and Texas811 locates.

  4. Build day

Old fence out, posts set in concrete, rails and boards up, gates hung and adjusted.

  5. Finished

Gates tested, debris hauled off, and the city inspection where the permit calls for one.
